Hello,

I'm building my first desktop ever after going from a Alienware m14x r1 (I know worst decision ever, I was young thought the lights were cool). I bought a MSI Gaming 970 motherboard AM3+ motherboard and bought a GTX 980 graphics card. The graphics card already arrived yesterday now waiting for the motherboard. I keep on reading on the MSI website that the Gaming 970 motherboard has 1 x PCIe 2.0 x16/x8, 1 x PCIe 2.0 x4/x8, 2 x PCIe 2.0 x1 or 2 x PCI. The GTX 980 says it requires Motherboard with free PCI Express slot and 6-pin + 8-pin Express supplementary power connector. I guess my question is did I completely screw myself in my choice of motherboard or will my GTX 980 work with the Gaming 970?

The PSU is the EVGA SuperNova 650 G1 80+ Gold and the asus strix gtx 980 says it needs at least 500 w. I am also doing the nzxt s340 case and its apparently extremely roomy inside so I think I'm in fact good on the power and size just didn't know if the graphics card and motherboard were compatible.

GTX 980 is a powerful card. Your motherboard support pci-Express Gen 2 x 16 and your card is pci-Express 3.0. This means you will not be able to get 100% out of your GPU but still the performance reduction will be very little and you wont even notice.

Now the power requirement has nothing to do with the motherboard. For gtx 960 it is recommended to have a 500w or greater PSU which will have a 6+2 pin power connector.

I recommend to go for a quality Brand if you havn't got one.
Some of which are Corsire, Coolermaster, Seasonic, XFX...

cheers :)

Aw well I guess a motherboard that supports PCIE 3.0 and a better PSU will be something to invest into in the future. But hey still has to be a step up from this overpriced laptop I have right now. :p
