i have a fairly new dell xps and it just came up on the bottom of my screen and it saids Bios update available : this is a critical BIO's update that will fix problems or add features to the computer BIO'S.its strongly recomended to update to the latest bio's... so my question is,is this safe to do?something i should be doing? i only ask cause ive never seen a bios update before so dont wanna do it and it crash my pc lol..

Solution
If it bothers you yes. If one day you start having problems with something, then you can go check Dell's support page to see if there are BIOS updates/fixes. I can count on two fingers the amount of motherboard and video card BIOS updates I've had to do in 20 years of PC building and maintaining/upgrading including several Dell desktops and laptops.

Just make sure if it is still under service warranty you don't delete anything that may void the warranty. Not sure about Dell these days...some OEM PC builders have screwy warranty rules. I would check with Dell support before doing anything. And take a screen capture of your answer!

don't fix it if it ain't broken, when it comes to bios updates there is no need, unless you have a reason(problem with existing BIOS)

ok thanks yeah i know nothing about bio's really so i figured id ask you all.My pc runs fine no issues so wasnt sure to update or not but il just leave it alone..thanks for the info ..

Dell should list what the fixes/updates are for the BIOS. The vast majority of the time, BIOS updates are not necessary unless there is a serious issue that needed fixing like a security flaw or input interface bug that was overlooked.

But one thing is for certain....once you flash the BIOS, you will not be able to go back to the previous version. It's done unless you have an aftermarket motherboard that allows reverse BIOS flashing (and Dell does not that I'm aware of).
