I'm currently using a gaming laptop from the end of 2013 - early 2014 that has an i5 - 4200M and a 750M GPU. I play CS:GO and occasionally Elite Dangerous on a 24" monitor, 1080p by 1920. I lag occasionally in CS, with especially hard lag near effects, such as smokes. I'm looking at getting a Skylake processor and a 960 4gb or a 970, but I'm wondering if the release of Pascal will drive the Maxwell gpu prices down enough to get a 970 or 980 for the same price as a 960 4gb. I don't urgently need a new machine, so I can wait.

I would say that the pascal release will drop the value of the cards more than normal due to the promised, near supercomputer specs, but not all the way down to the 960, i would say for what you play a 960 will do fine with an i5 skylake. you probably don't need the extra power. plus you can upgrade to two in the future if you want to deal with SLI.
