I am a first time pc builder. I want to play games like Battlefield 4 and other games of that sort (possibly some slightly more demanding games) at 1440p at very near 60FPS or above. I am not sure my current GPU (Nvidia GTX 980) is up to the task. I want to keep my overall build price around $2000. The 980 would give me lots of room to upgrade other components, but a 980ti would give me more gaming performance. Should I go with the Ti, or is the 980 sufficient?

It's about $150 more and the performance increase is pretty impressive, however, if you currently own a GTX 980 4gb I would stick with that and wait for Pascal to release. The 980 4gb should handle 1440P/60FPS with a mix of med/high settings depending on the game.

(I currently have no parts) If I were to get a 1080p monitor instead, do you think the 980 would be sufficient?

The 980 4gb fine for both 1080P/1440P but if your starting from scratch then just grab the 980 ti 6gb, its worth the extra $150. And just a heads up, if you ever decide to grab an additional 16gb of RAM (32gb total) you will need the Pro version of Windows. All in all its a good build, +1. Changing the SSD/CPU cooler will also allow you to get the Pro version of Win10, Skylake, DDR4, (you can also OC the non-K i7).
