My CPU came with a cooler master heat-sink and fan by AMD for the CPU which is an FX-4170, I've built quite a few computers over the years. But this is really bugging me, everything is running at stock speeds, no overclock's on my puppy until i H2O cool it, I have a few heat sinks laying around and plenty thermal paste/grease (not tried the grease yet on this problem) however the newly purchased paste made NO difference whatsoever.
I have a large case with 11 120mm fans, which don't really help my 1st PCI-e x16 slot being so close to the CPU, which I suspect is cause heat build up, to add to this theory, my hyper-x RAM is also very close to the CPU. I HAVE TRIED adjusting the thermal tolerances in the bios from 90 degress to 100 just to give it a little room to fluctuate, but to no avail.
I will add that the CPU was bought 2nd hand from amazon, this to me is an ever so slight concern, but would not explain why the sudden (past month or so) change in thermal behavior. And if you saw inside my case you would think i built it yesterday, it really is that clean.
Another theory is a dying power supply, which is slightly due to the load i've put on it, and am probably going to put money on this being the cause of the thermals shutting the machine off.
If you want full specs please ask, I use speccy.

currently running speccy and HWMonitor now, i'll just start BF4 campaign and let you know.

Ok, so the temps went from ambient 39/45 idle, to rise 1 degree per minute to 65 degree and then i quit the game so i could reply, but it seem that continual rise of 1 degree a minute is what doesn't stop.

I used snipping tool whith BF4 & HWmonitor open so you can see.

Full specs of PC would help us a lot. Now let me explain how to read temperatures on an FX chip from AMD. When AMD launched the FX chips , they also changed the way you have to read the temperatures by reading the thermal margins. I suggest you download AMD Overdrive and read the thermal margins. Keep in mind that the thermal margins work in reverse. Thermal margins have a cap of 70 C which is actually 0 C. So for example if your thermal margin is lets say 10C under load, your actual temperature would be 60C. I am giving you these numbers based on the AMDs stock CPU cooler and is just a guess. If you do not understand how thermal margins work, please tell and I will try to explain better.

There's is one from the past 24 hours, however the place i am situated receives a lot of power cuts, and we had a power cut 5hrs ago for 35 minutes.

Power outages can be 3 times daily, or go a week without a cut. Electricity is supplied by huge diesel generators, and really isn't reliable.

Ok, i've got the AMD OD, can you give a heads up on what a first time user should be doing, to provide you with the info you require?

Well, AoD is a decent software for information and some tweaking. I would explore it since in terms of temperatures is the most accurate for AMD over all programs out there. Thermal margin can be found on the very first tab if I remember correctly. Try to test the CPU with the stress test provided. Check the thermal margins and calculate yourself. But in all honesty, I think you have got bigger problems after you have revealed the electricity issues you've got.

100% load for 10 minutes temps didn't exceed 67.9celcius on stability test on all 4 cores simultaneously. My mind is now pointing toward a bottle neck between the GTX 980 and the FX-4170, but i could be wrong. The problem happens with all battlelog games after an hour or so of playing. It seems to be a thermal issue, but identifying which component is the cause, has been proved to be frustrating as all 3 components do generally get hot anyway. Having said that, the over-current protection is on for CPU, GPU and RAM in the ROG Bios.
