I'm in the midst of backing up my steam games, and I just wondered if I would have any performance loss running them from a usb 3.0 drive as opposed to an internal sata II drive at 5400rpm?

For backups, I always recommend an external drive that can be disconnected, and kept away from(different location if possible) what's being backed up. If you get a virus, or your machine catches fire, your connected internal sata drive could be affected, but a disconnected external drive in a different place or building would still be fine.

You are correct but he's talking about his games library here, I think taking it to a fireproof vault in a different city might be slightly OTT

I wouldn't say he should take it completely to another city, but putting it on an external drive does have advantages. It would make it easy to install to another system - (family sharing) or replacing the system. Also I've seen many systems get hit with the ransom-ware virus. Keeping the stuff on a disconnected external drive does keep it safe from being affected by viruses.

Well in the end I installed my OS on a 3tb 5400rpm WD Green. I thought it might be slow, but not really.

My steam games are on a WD blue 1tb 7200rpm drive. Which maxed out about 140mb/s.

The external was about 120mb/s, and the 5400rpm drive was about 100mb/s, so I just went with the fastest.

Can't install mY OS on the WD blue 7200rpm drive because every single time I do it corrupts itself within the boot sector for what seems like absolutely no reason at all. It's like windows "decides" to convert it to GPT without permission, which my computer does not support.
