how can I update my IBOOK G4 when my laptop says its connected to a WiFi network but can't access the internet at all?

Yes I have had this laptop forever. It has always run and operated perfect. Tho, I haven't had it turned on in some time like 9 months to maybe 10 since I last had it on. It is the first time that Ive connected to this WiFi network with my apple. It prompted me for the security key or password before it said it was connected, so I put the password in and it then said it was connected. Now the last time I had it on it would connect to whatever WiFi and do its thing like its suppose to. So............?

OK yes my apple has always worked perfectly since I purchased it 6 or 7 years ago. Yes it is the first time I am attempting to connect to my WIFI. I am not sure if it will connect to any WIFI right now I do know the last time I had it on it there were no problems which was about 10 to 11 months ago. Yes when I see the name of my WIFI under available networks I click on it and then it prompts me for the network key I then type in the password to my WIFI and click connect. It says it is but will not allow me to actually do or see anything on line.
