Hi everyone,
I'm looking to buy a low end 1tb SSD to replace a 7.5 year old 500GB mechanical HDD. It's strictly a game drive, as I have a 120GB boot SSD.
I know I'd get a lot more mileage out of another mechanical HDD but I want to go SSD.
I'm looking at an OCZ Trion 100. It's $200 on Amazon right now. The Tom's SSD review suggests the Mushkin Reactor 1TB but it's currently $245 on Amazon. Will I regret the OCZ drive or should I actually consider the Mushkin that's more than 20% more expensive? I don't think I need to be too concerned with the performance since it's just a game drive.
Thanks in advance for your input.

I use an OCZ Vertex as my boot drive in my PC and have had 0 issues. That said I had bought two identical drives, the other one I installed in my PS3 and that one failed after a year (or whatever the warranty was). OCZ replaced it (took about a month) and I have no problems since.

Overall good experience especially with customer service, however had I used that drive in my PC and the other in my PS3 I would have had a day of rebuilding my PC/OS which is a pain in the ass. If/when I upgrade I would likely spend a few more dollars on a better brand because of that. SSD failures should be rare, so one is enough to leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Recently bought the Sandisk ultra II 960gb myself working great so far. but i was also considering the OCZ - and i wouldnt listen to that old news about failures etc as toshiba have taken over and thats who are making the newer OCZ drives
and as you see the reviews on those trion drives are great

OCZ was bought by Toshiba, to round out their storage division (they already had a 2.5" HDD production line, and got the 3.5" HDD production line from Hitachi). So I would forget the high failure rate on old OCZ drives, as Toshiba is one of only about a dozen companies which makes flash controllers. We'll have to wait and see how well the new OCZ drives hold up.

I'll put in another vote for Sandisk for a budget 1TB SSD. Solid flash memory company. Their only drawback is high power draw (compared to Samsung), but that's not an issue on a desktop. That said, if you've never bought from jet.com, they usually have a 15% or 20% off coupon for first-time buyers. That'll drop the price of a 1TB Samsung 850 EVO to about $245-$260.

from thestoragereview.com:

"OCZ’s first TLC SSD, the Trion 100, was released in July 2015. But reviewers from CNET and AnandTech found that the Trion 100 significantly underperformed our pick, the Samsung 850 EVO. Kristian Vättö of AnandTech said, “In fact, the Trion is the slowest modern TLC drive we’ve tested and in some cases it is so by a quite hefty margin.” We’re dismissing this drive from consideration."

Thanks for all of yoyr responses. It really helped me. I was actually planning on going with the sandisk until my local Fry's said they would price match Newegg and still give me the MiR on the OCZ. Plugged it in last night and transferred all my games. Going strong so far. Hoping the risk pays off. Even if it doesn't, the price I paid was probably worth it.
