So I got one of the cards listed in the title and it is making me nervous. When I'm playing BF4 I'm getting GPU temp. averages between 82 C and as high as 92 C. It also sounds like a helicopter while playing. Which is not much of issue since BF4 is loud on its own.

Should I be worried?

Thanks

I'm beginning to suspect the issue is in the card itself. Maybe the thermal paste didn't get properly applied or too little. Not likely, but possible.
Since the fans are speeding up in relation to the rising temp, I would not think the high fan speed was simply a BIOS error. Your case is huge and should not suffer from an air flow problem unless you live in extremely hot climes.
If replacing the thermal paste doesn't change anything, then I'd be inclined to believe you just got a hot chip.

If that's the case, maybe play around with the fan curve to have the fans ramp up sooner but to a lower, quieter RPM. Then go slowly up to 100% as temps increase. I have a reference R9-290 that I had to do that with. It was getting to 94C in...

Hey,
Clutchc

Thanks for answering. It is a Corsair Obsidian 750D full tower case using an EVGA 850W SuperNova B2 Bronze rated semi modular power supply. There is good air in the case and there is a could 3 - 4 or more inches between the GPU and the top of the power supply.

But since the power supply is only Bronze rated maybe a better one would help?

Thanks Again

No. Sounds like you have all bases covered there. Bronze, silver, gold are just efficiency ratings. No bearing on capacity or quality. It sounds like the card is getting hot and the fan(s) are kicking into high speed to keep the card cool. Did this just start happening, or has it always been that hot running? The R9-380X is a 190W card at reference. I imagine yours is more than that. Not a cool running card normally. But I would expect it to peak at lower temps than that. What does it idle at?

Hey,
Clutchc

The idle is pretty good right around 50 C on average. And it has been running like that since I got it. I know AMD runs hot compared Nvidia but I wasn't expecting this hot. Also, most of my research shows people saying these are running at about 70 C - 80 C or so on average under load.

Thanks Again

I have a reference R9-290 that I had to do that with. It was getting to 94C in almost every game and the fans noise was obnoxious. After playing with the fan curve, I now have it staying in the high 80Cs and much quieter.

Yeah. What I think I'm going to do is order some Artic Cooling MX-4 thermal paste and then use that on the card. While I've never taken apart a GPU before I have been building my own systems since 1992 and got an AAS in Computer Networking in 2011. So hopefully I have enough experience to NOT destroy the PCB on the card. LOL.

Thanks again for all your help, clutchc.
