Ebenjamino,

The Dell Precision 7710 should be a good basis for the system as these have a 17.3" Dell Ultrasharp screen- the largest laptop screen- and can accommodate quite good options, especially an M.2 boot drive.

New Precision 17 7000 Series (7710)

The CPU can be an i7-Skylake or Xeon E3 and ECC or non ECC RAM and up to 64GB of RAM. However, I think 32GB would be plenty, and that should support video editing as well. The largest storage drive is 2TB and so I would suggest buying a couple of large capacity external USB drives. Depending on the needs for visualization, there are a variety of Firpero and Quadro mobile workstation cards. A quite good specification will cost about $3,000. These are not the lightest laptops, but are durable and built for reliability.

If you have an array of inputs including microphone preamp, DAT, MIDI, ethernet, etc., with a laptop the best solution will be an external USB interface. As a general purpose, high capability interface, perhaps:

MOTU UltraLite AVB USB/AVB Interface > $649

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/UltraLiteAVB

This has a very good array of I/O including ethernet and MIDI. There are other good mobile interfaces from Presonus and Focusrite. Have a look through the offerings at Sweetwater.

> and monitor for editing with headphones with output to a studio monitoring system for mixing /panning.

To be any more specific, the list of inputs and software would be necessary.

You might consider adding a pair of monitors that can be connected when editing. Dual monitors seem to be to essential even if they are not very large- I use a pair of elderly 19"- to be able to see everything that's going on and have the waveforms large enough to see for editing.

If you don't need the portability of a laptop, of course a desktop workstation will be more versatile. Sonar is multi-threaded and you could run an 8-core Xeon.

Cheers,

My friend never lets me forget when he paid $6000 AU on a dell laptop and the build quality was absolutely shocking. It really was.
Honestly with laptop quality, nothing comes close to Apple. Sony's highend is also great however they are business, not multimedia orientated.

again, a PC for home and an apple mac pro for on the move.

fredfinks,

The MacBook Pros are nicely made and stylish, but as they are very thin, are not very customizable /expandable. The monitor is limited to 15". As for build quality, the MacBookPro weighs 4.5 lbs and a Precision 7710 is 7.5lbs - not as stylish, but the extra weight is structure and clearances contributing to ruggedness. A friend at NASA used Precision M's while flying instrumentation in planes equipped to record the effects of lightning strikes in thunderstorms. These planes were in extremely rough conditions and in one case, the plane was struck by lightning 43 times in an hour as my friend was pleased to report. As far as I know, there were no failures in the instrumentation systems.

I agree that a desktop is better for editing, but it's not economical to record on a mobile system and download to a desktop when you can just bring the laptop from the studio and plug in the monitors and mouse or use a docking system. Adding a desktop is duplication of the most expensive hardware and a workstation laptop can include sufficient capabilities. The cost of the desktop could pay for the monitors, interface, external drive, and monitoring system

Cheers,

BambiBoom.
