I'm attempting to repair a friend's Acer Aspire laptop that's stuck in a startup loop. I've tried using Windows Startup Repair, which did not help, and it also appears that the Recovery Partition is non-existent. I've also tried to use another Windows 7 cd to attempt to repair Windows, but it also did not help. I've decided to just reinstall Windows.

I was able to recover her Windows 7 activation key, but I have had no luck in getting an installation disc or appropriate iso. Right now I am considering two possible solutions, but I wanted to get the opinions of other people as to whether or not either of these possibilities could work.

1) My laptop is also an Acer laptop running the same version of Windows 7 (Home Premium). Both laptops have OEM versions of Windows. Is it possible for me to make a recovery disc of my laptop and then use it to reinstall Windows on her laptop, using her activation key?

2) Is it possible to install another version of retail Windows 7 (I would be using Professional) over the existing OEM Windows 7 Home Premium? I would of course be using a new activation key that comes with the new copy of Windows 7.

Thanks

Microsoft installation media differs when it comes to type of purchase.
OEM Windows comes preinstalled and rarely with media form. OEM Windows installation media can be installed on any PC but only the OEM key of a specific system will activate.
There are also VM, GGWA and Retail editions each with a different type of Windows installer and key that they can accept.
If you don't have a Windows media disk but you have the key, then any Windows OEM media works. I personally recommend USB sticks since they are faster.
