I have to insert and remove flash drive several times for it to work.

Hello everyone,

I've been using a flashdrive for a while now with this issue and as I store more and more stuff on it I am growing more concerned about it breaking altogether.

I am using a Sandisk 128GB flashdrive. Out of the box I was asked to reformat it, which I thought was normal, so I tried, but it failed to reformat.

Long story short, I plug the drive in, it asks to be reformatted, I remove and try again, it isn't recognized at all, I do this 1-5 times before it works correctly. This is an inconvenience, but I'm willing to put up with it, however I do not want it to suddenly crash for good, effectively erasing a semester's worth of work.

I tried a few troubleshooting methods of different ways to reformat a flash drive and none worked. I'd love a fix, but I'm really looking to see if this is an issue anyone else has encountered and if my drive will inevitably fail or not.

Thanks in advance for any help!
Zach

Hey there again, Wriz!

I'd recommend you backup any important data from the flash drive somewhere else and consider replacing it. It sounds like something is physically damaged. I'd advise you to use a different flash drive because yours might fail soon, so be careful with your files.

Best of luck!

Welcome to Tom's Hardware, Zach!

I'd recommend you to update your computer's USB hub controller drivers from the PC or motherboard manufacturer's website. Make sure you get the latest drivers from there. I'd also suggest you plugging it to a different USB port. Connecting it to another computer altogether might also be a good idea in order to determine how it will get recognized there.

Keep me posted with the troubleshooting.

Have you copied all your files inside of your usb drives? If I'm not wrong the problem is unmountable drive, you can follow this link to try to repair using DISKPART: http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-repair-windows-7-from-usb-flash-drive-repair-without-installation-dvd-disc/

Then go back here and tell me what happen.

Thank you for the response, but unfortunately I have this issue with every computer I try using, so it's definitely an issue with the drive, not my USB ports.

Thanks for your replies, I guess I was unlucky and received a defective drive. Time to go flash drive shopping, haha.
