Cloning HDD to MSATA SSD Questions

I have recently bought a 250GB mSata evo 850 SSD for my laptop. I am just wondering how I can migrate my data from the HDD to the SSD. How do I put the OS on the SSD and can I choose which programs go to the SSD. For example, I only want SOME games to go on my SSD from my steam folder. Is this possible?

Solution

No, that will not work.

Does the factory reset partition still exist? If so, it will allow you to generate your own OS install DVD media.
Use this with the new drive.

Or, buy an external drive. Copy stuff off your current drive to reduce it to below 200GB.
Clone from old to new.

Games, yes. Steam games can be moved as needed.
Static files like doc/music/video. No problem. Pick and choose.
The OS and other applications/programs? All or nothing.

What size is the current HDD?
What size is the new SSD? (250GB)
How much total used space is on the HDD?
How much of that is games?
How much of that is doc/music/funny cat videos?

Edit: add: Do you have another drive? Maybe an external?

My HDD has 240 GB free of 691 GB
New SSD is 250 GB
Nearly all of it is games: My steam folder is 291GB, meaning I have 159GB of programs and funny cat videos very lol xD lmao
I do not have another drive

Could I reinstall windows onto my HDD so it is fresh, install everything I want on the SSD onto the HDD and then clone it. But then, how do I clone it? Can I just stick it in the laptop and copy paste everything over and then set my SSD as the boot drive? Or do I need a special lead or something?

edit: the "159GB of programs and funny cat videos very lol xD lmao" does not include my Origin games folder, which is 109GB. So I only have 50GB of programs etc etc

Recommended way forward:

Clean OS install on the new SSD
Once it is up and fully running, then you can move things over to it as needed and as space permits.

Some Steam games, install some/most other applications.

Moving Steam games, see this: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7418-YUBN-8129
(ignore the part about the Steam Installation)
You can move 'some' of the games to the SSD, and leave others on the HDD.

Ok. But I still have no idea how to get the data onto the SSD. Do I need to buy something like this:http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00RNECU36/ref=s9_simh_gw_p147_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=desktop-1&pf_rd_r=1C0FG8VN7J6J20NSEX5Q&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=577048407&pf_rd_i=desktop
or can I just copy and paste once it is in the laptop

Ok. Thank you for your help. I think I will just reset my computer, then download everything I want to go on to my SSD, then clone. At which point, I will make the SSD the bootable drive and put all my dank ass memes on the other hard drive. Thank you for your help!
