down loaded linuxMintCinnamon, rufus tried to make USB bootable to accept Linux no success have searched for many hours other means of making usb bootable such as diskpart, even this was hopeless. Any one any idea how to get Linux any version on to my PC running windows 10.
Need something like a windows download but it should be a LINUX download that will automatically load all needed items to make Linux work on PC.
Please help!

don't know ? I use Linux mint 17 mate. all I did was down load the iso with my windows 7 then burned a dvd then went to bios changed the boot order to optical drive first boot device with the Linux dvd in it and booted straight to Linux desktop ??

http://askubuntu.com/questions/329704/syslinux-no-default-or-ui-configuration-directive-found

did you copy the iso from the usb stick ? is the usb formatted correct ? may have a unsupported pendrive or defective ?

I would try another download of the iso and save it to a folder then burn it to a dvd ?

seems like I got it from University of Oklahoma last time ?? [ notice -- ''Media DVD '' ]

you can insure a good download...

Hi! junkeymonkey ;
I tried your info and was unable to get Linuxmint established, obviously am doing sometyhing wrong, but I cant see it.
Here is a message reced from 2 of my tries to install linuxmint-cinnamon & linuxmint.
" No servers were found in the config file. This can only be a config error. MDM has started a single server for you. You should log in and fix the config. NOTE auto timed log in disabled."
Now I do not know what this identifies as I never use or mentioned use of server??
Both USB and DVD booted gave Linux mint up to the GREEM M symbol then screen went into a silver coloured screen quarter the size of my monitor showing error info which to me was gobledigook. Sorry ?
Hope you have a solution.
Regards. M.Beg

I don't fool with the pen drive deal just not as ''goof proof '' as a live dvd way ?

you could try a slightly older mint 17 to see if something changes ?

just to add maybe of interest ''But the same feature that blocks rootkits will also block other software, like Linux boot loaders ''

http://www.pcworld.com/article/2901262/microsoft-tightens-windows-10s-secure-boot-screws-where-does-that-leave-linux.html

between Microsoft and all there win-10 tricks and making it so proprietary and all the rest of the crap surrounding it then intel and how skylake ''works'' and all its limitations as well

to me anyone investing in any of those two thing just don't really realize how bad that are and how well there getting screwed over

a bad OS and a bad intel platform that's designed to only fully work together .as they see fit.. the more I see everyday on win -10 and skylake the more I see what I really got with win-7 and haswell , it works as I need it to not how ''they'' thing I need it to [opinion]

looks like intel is also making it to where you got to run 10 and I guess 10 only ?

http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/01/skylake-users-given-18-months-to-upgrade-to-windows-10/

thing is I don't see or get how that may block a standalone Linux boot ? maybe disconnect the windows 10 hard drive so the only thing it can boot to is the Linux ?? just looks like a personal computer is a thing of the past ??

The little silver screen you saw is the last phase of the boot process before the mint desktop actually shows. Don't worry about the error message on that screen... just wait awhile and the desktop should eventually load (but anything longer than a few minutes means there is another problem). If the desktop never loads after the small screen, then you need to edit the boot parameters so mint will work with your particular hardware. I think your live media usb/dvd has been created correctly, you just need to add the word nomodeset to the boot string (after the quiet_splash parameter, which is already there). I think you can edit the boot string from the first screen that appears (where you select the boot mode default or efi)... choose default mode and edit that string.

Do NOT use a 3rd party application for making bootable USB drives, they have been known to inject files and mess things up which is not necessary since the ISO is already meant to support USB boot. Go to the Linux Mint website and download the ISO of your choice. Format your USB drive to Fat32. Next, open the ISO with a program like WinRAR or 7Zip and copy all of the files inside the ISO to the blank USB drive, just like if you were copying files from a folder. That's it, you now have a bootable USB. Also, check in your BIOS to make sure that the computer will allow you to boot from a USB and you might want to turn on Legacy Support.

Hi! Colleagues; junkeymonkey - jsmurray2 - skittle - spankmon
Thanks for the info to you all, had a look as sugested and understood more on Linux.
I eventually used UBUNTU MATE 15 via USB it seemed to work .
Brought up the tricoloured screen with info etc. I actioned install to get on but had to abort since I was unable to
understand the following: /dev/sda
/ sda 1 ntfs 164485 Mb unknown windows 7 (Loader)
/ sda 2 ntfs 140117 Mb 113 Mb
/ sda 3 ntfs 470 Mb 267 Mb
/ sda 5 ntfs 1195215 Mb 836493 Mb
On windows Diskmanagement it shows the following:
simple basic 449 Mb free 449Mb 100%
C: basic ntfs 1539.19 Gb 84.02GB 55%
D; basic ntfs 1113.13 GB 332,58 GB 30%
E: basic ntfs 130.49 GB 130.38 GB 100%
So you see I am unsure where to istall. Ideally I want to install on the E: drive which has 113+ GB free
Perhaps you can understand the two terminologies and guide me to place the UBUNTU on my E: drive I hope so.
Thanks again and look forward to any reply.
Regards.
M. Beg
