Hey all! Unsure if this is the correct forum.

I am currently looking to upgrade part/s of my existing rig, since I have found that it has become quite outdated with the new games etc coming into the market. I have always been a sucker for AMD (Due to pricing reasons usually) but if you think that intel/NVidia would be good please do say, as I am trying to bring this closer to the current game market specifications.

I would be looking to upgrade any amount of components, as long as the total is less than around £300.

Current Build:

Motherboard: Asus M5a99x EVO R1.0
CPU: AMD FX 8350 4.0ghz
CPU Cooler: Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO
GPU: MSI Twin Frozr III HD7970 3gb
RAM: 16gb ram (4x4gb) - unsure of speeds sorry..
SSD: Kingston 120gb
HDD: 1tb - Unsure of brand
PSU: 700w Xigmatek pc702
Case: Zalman Z9

I was looking at the R9 390 and it seems like a good graphics upgrade, but I thought I would ask you all before I go ahead with the purchase. I do feel I need to upgrade the graphics card, since the card was running ok before the AMD fan driver mess up they had with the release of the Crimson driver, so I was thinking something might've been damaged due to fan failure.

What do you feel is lacking in this build and what would you change? (Bearing in mind my budget)Or any advice you could give?

Many Thanks

You can't get a new CPU for that much, that is for sure. The HD7970 is a strong, powerful card. Sure you can get an r9 390x but will the upgrade be worth it? Not really. Way too minor, just one step above. Most likely a waste of money. Better wait for next gen cards and save more because as things stand right now you are spending 300 for something way too minor.

Hmm I was leaning towards a 390(Not x) due to the fact that the crimson drivers feel like they have pretty much ruined my current card, leading to its lack in performance compared to before I installed and used the drivers. so the difference would probably be a lot larger than you are thinking. Of course I am not 100% certain that it was the driver that caused this, but ever since then it has been lacking in performance compared to before.

Thanks for the opinion though, might just wait it out for a bit.

I agree with the others that the 390 isn't much of an upgrade from your current card, but if your current card has issues, then that would work. One thing that could have a pretty significant increase in overall performance is overclocking your CPU. I'm not a big AMD guy, but I'm sure you could get some added performance from your 8350 and that's a free upgrade right there. If you add the overclock with a new GPU, you should be in pretty good shape. Many motherboards have an auto overclock feature in the BIOS if you don't want to or know how to overclock manually. That should be able to get you at least about 500mhz with no issues. Good luck.

Thanks, I will try to look into overclocking. I have tried to in the past, but didn't really get anywhere. Ill look up some guides and hopefully that will improve performance.
