Whats the difference between m.2 and ssds

I know that m.2 take pcie lanes, and i belive they take 4 but are they faster than ssd's i currently have a 1tb ssd but i am thinking of getting a m.2 for extra storage. Also pcie lanes a problem im running 2 titan x's in sli and i have a 5960x so i still have 8 pcie lanes

M.2 refers to the slot that you put a type of SSD into. M.2 SSDs certainly can be faster than their SATA counterparts as PCIe is a much faster connection. However you should note that not all M.2 SSDs actually use PCIe as the slot also has standard SATA data channels. You'll have to see which SSD you're getting and determine whether or not the one you're getting is actually using PCIe.

As to how many lanes of PCIe you have available, you'll have to look up your motherboard specs. Some boards disable some lanes or even entire PCIe slots if the M.2 is used. Will just have to see how your board handles it in the manual.

the read and write speeds of M2 drives are much faster if using the PCIe lanes, 3-4 times the maximum of an SATA based drive.
they are not enclosed the way SATA SSDs are. you may need a heatsink for the M2 as they run hotter than a SATA SSD, raspberry pi heatsinks seem to do the job nicely.

if you get an M2 I would strongly suggest putting your os on it if the motherboard will boot to it. some may not.
