GPU Temp Sensor/Fan Control faulty?

Hi all,

I'm running a Radeon HD6970 and am having some problems with the fan control/temp sensor.

At some point yesterday the fan on the GPU went to its absolute max (sounds like a mini jet engine). It appears stuck on the max setting and the noise is driving me crazy!

Ive used catalyst control sensor and speedfan and they both measure the GPU Temp at -128 (thats minus 128!). Ive used them both to attempt to manually control the fans but they have no effect. Whether I select 100% or 5% the fan just continues to run at the same speed.

I've tried opening up, cleaning away dust and cleaning with rubbing alcohol, no luck.

Other than this the GPU is working perfectly. I'd hate to have to replace an expensive GPU simply because its making too much noise. Does anyone have any suggestions?
