I recently bought a new rig, without a dedicated soundcard. The motherboard is a Asus Z97-Pro Gamer. My question is though, should I upgrade it to a dedicated soundcard? I watch loads of movies (I do not use 5.1), I'm a semi-gamer and I listen to music. The thing is, I tried to use onboard on my last rig wich was a sound chipset Realtek, that sucked hard. I've used a cheap CB0570 for some years, and it won't work with windows 10 now on my new rig. So the question is will I get an improvment from my onboard with the likes of ASUS X Xonar DGX? I play my music through vintage soundgear, and I guess I hear more distortion and stuff through this onboard than I ever did on my CB0570. The sound levels are definitely lower and not as clear I guess, hard to compare though as I cant get the CB0570 working on my new rig.

IMHO, you should get the sound card. If all you did was play games and occasional movies, I would stick to the on-board, but it appears you seriously enjoy your music as you are running it from Pc > audio components > ?speakers. If that vintage soundgear is or was top notch, the music from your board/PC won't sound very good.
Mind sharing with us what your soundgear is (MacIntosh perhaps)?

The Mani 2 and Modi 2 are great if you are just using headphones from schiit audio, wile being external, so you can use it with multiple inputs, e.g. laptop's and phones.

Hope this helps
