Power Supply issues with my new gtx 970

My videocard is a evga gtx 970 that requires a 8pin and a 6 pin pcie

I have an old (5-7yrs) thermaltake 650W "toughpower" psu

For some reason when I connect everything i'm getting the "Please power down and connect PCIe Power Cables For This Graphics Card" message. I'm trying to figure out if I have a dead card or if there is something else I should try before I gouge my eyes out :).

So I have 3 free 6pins available in my case i'm trying to get this to work by connecting 2 of them to the y-cable that came with my card (2 6pins to 8 pin) and one directly to the card but no luck...

I've tried all three of the cords with my old card that took 2 6pins (I alternated) and they all seem to be working.

Does it matter that of the 3 cords only 1 is coming directly from the psu?? The other two seem to be coming off the optical drive?

Any thoughts or ideas will be greatly appreciated.

What are these cables "coming off the optical drive" you are talking about? What you are saying is a bit unclear. Either your power supply has an 8-pin PCIe cable (or 6+2 works) and a 6-pin (again, 6+2 works, just plug in only 6) and you plug those into the GPU. If those cables are plugged into the GPU from the power supply, and it says "plug in PCIe cables", then either something is wrong with the cables or the GPU.

At your power supply's age, I'd really recommend looking into a new one anyway. Toughpower were never anything too fabulous, but not the absolute worst, but by now you could have some failing parts in there, and with this nice new GPU a new PSU would not be a bad idea.

Hey Thanks for your input and apologies for my lack of clarity. I just meant that 2 of the 6 pins (as well as the optical drive and 2 hard drives) all share the same main cable coming off the psu. Sorry, not really sure of the terminology, making it up as I go. :)

Is there any way to figure out if its a bad card? When I power on the fans do spin (on the gpu) ...

Thanks

Hard drives and optical drivers are powered by SATA power cables:

Graphics card by PCIe cable:

They most certainly do not use the same cables. I think if you post a picture describing your cable situation, it'll be easiest, because I still don't understand you. :p

Ok, I just meant that most of my periphails (optical drive, hard drive and 2 of the 6 pin connectors going into the gpu) are all getting power from the top "4 pin" port you see in the image...not sure if that is part of the problem??

Thanks, now that that's sorted, any ideawhat could be causing my issues. Does it make sense to try to get a 6pim to 8 pin cord and plug to the psu (and gpu)?

Any ideas as far as troubleshooting?

I guess thats my problem, I don't have any other cables that came with my psu... I was hoping i'b be able to connect it the same way my gtx 560 was connected

Ok...

So this morning after doing some rewiring and unplugging and reinserting everything I got it to work...kinda. So it would power on then after a few seconds power off and restart. Over and over. At this point I decided to take your advice and go and get a new psu (evga supernova p2). Just got it installed but the problem persist. Just put my old gpu in and same story... I definitely missed something.

Any thoughts?
(Thank you.)

Thanks, so I narrowed it down to the new ram I just installed, everything works when its not in. I tried resetting the cmos battery and still no luck. I'm beginning to wonder if I just got a bad set of ram..
