Setting up Repeater

I'm trying to set up a d'link router as a repeater but not having any luck. I complete the set up wizard to make it a repeater but I think the problem lies in the LAN IP addresses for my two routers.

The primary router (access point?) has an IP address of 192.168.1.1, however the router I'm trying to use as a repeater has an IP address of 192.168.0.1. Whenever I try and change this (as told to do in the numerous online tutorials I've consulted) I get told that it's not possible (a problem with the interface - this error message appears - IP Address(192.168.1.50)or network used in the other interface !!).

Is there any way to change the default IP address so that they're both the same?

Thanks in advance.

That is a different subnet.

Are you trying to set up a wireless repeater, or are you connecting an Ethernet cable (or powerline adapters) from one main router to a second set up as an AP? This will dictate the addresses you use.

And you do not want to give them both the same address.

Also, a couple comments on wireless repeaters. The most successful way is to use dd-wrt often because there is no real standard for WDS that is used on many repeaters, so different brands do not often work together well and even the same brand can have issues. That is one reason that I rarely recommend using a repeater and instead suggest a router configured as an AP.

Thanks for your response. I was trying to set it up as a wireless repeater as I can't really run a cable between the two routers. I will give dd-wrt a go to see if that works.

While it will need a good signal where placed, dd-wrt will allow you to set up a client bridge if your device is dd-wrt capable. It will not provide a better extender though in an area with an existing poor signal.

Since you did not answer any of my questions, I can offer nothing else at this point.
