Suggestions for external RAID harddrive storage

I'm looking to purchase a external RAID harddrive setup for at least 3 TB of space. I'm mostly interested in the RAID 1 setup, to secure my files in the best possible way.

I'm not that interested in a NAS, since I don't expect to access the files over the network and I can always connect it via USB 3.0 to my router if the need arises.

Is RAID 1 the way to go? And what do you recommend of harddrives? Is it best to buy 2 separate brands to be sure you don't get a bad batch or do they need to be identical?

Solution
RAID can be beneficial. BUT it is not a substitute for backups. RAID will only protect against one type (physical disk) failure. There are LOTS of other ways files are lost. Deletion, corruption, fire, theft, etc. Backups can protect against those threats as well as disk failure.
Don't be complacent and think that you are protected because you have RAID.

Solution
Agree 100%. RAID is beneficial for servers which must stay online in the even of a drive failure. It's redundancy, not backups that RAID makes sense. For small office and home use, the percentage of data lost due to a drive failure is small compared to all the other causes. One of the most common reasons for data loss is actually user error while messing around with the array! Just get a large single drive, or back your important files up to DVD or other external device, not using a RAID'd array of any kind.
