Hi there, I am looking for a new cpu as ive bought a new motherboard Msi z97 pc mat socket 1150, I have a kind of tight budget and I am looking for a new cpu ive been looking at the i3 4130 mainly due to the fact that its got a high base clock and the 4 threads it has, I can pick this cpu up for 86 euro and i thought that is a very good price. On the other hand a used i5 4460 or something similar like a 4590 or 4590s are around 170-190 euro which is quite a jump in price, Ill be pairing this with a GTX 780 8gb of ram and ill be gaming(fallout 4 Gta v and others) ill be streaming too the odd time, is the i3 enough to get me away for a few months until i can get a 4690 or something ? Im in ireland so prices in euro

Thanks

I would get the cheep Pentium G3258 and overclock it to 4.2ghz on the stock cooler. Then when you have the money get a 4690k and a decent heatsink.

I think fallout requires a quad core or it will not start, there might be a workaround.

i3 is kinda expensive if you know you are going to just replace it.

edit: streaming will require a quad core at minimum, i7 preferably.
For gaming and poorly coded games like Fallout 4 your best bet is to go with the i5 4460. While the i3 may have four threads it lacks the actual cores the i5 has. Past games usually used 2-3 cores in gaming, however newer AAA titles are using more cores all the time and DX 12 is more than likely going to make that trend even stronger. For future proofing and playing upcoming DX 12 games, as well as poorly coded games like Fallout 4 you will have much better performance with the 4 core i5 4460. For streaming you have to have the i5, the i3 won't work.

Really for the games you want to play: Fallout 4, GTA V you aren't going to be happy with the i3 4130. The i5 4460 will play those games much better and give you the ability to stream, which you simply can't do with an i3.

You can't depend on being able to get "X" amount out of any overclock. I've worked with processors (both AMD and Intel) that have gotten an additional 1.5Ghz overclocking out of it, and I've worked with processors that no matter what you do you can't squeeze more than 300 - 400Mhz extra out of it. It all depends how you do in the "chip lottery" as to how well that individual chip will overclock.

You always have to go into a processor with the idea that the base clock will be enough for you, and any addition overclock performance is just icing on the cake.
