Hey I've just networked my apartment and was using a cable tester and 2 of the cables seem faulty.

When I test one of the cat6 cables the tester only lights up to 6 and then restarts again, this is happening on both ends of the tester when it should be going up to 8 LED lights for a good cable.

The other cable in the other room the LED's light up from 1-2 then jumps to 5 then back to 3, 4, 6,7,8.

What do these results mean and what should I be doing to fix the cables? should I cut them at both ends and terminate them again with new modular plugs?

Thanks

Most likely on the 1st cable, the last pair (pins 7 & 8) isn't connected - probably not a problem with the cable, just a bad termination.

For the 2nd cable, it is probably mis-wired - the standard pairing is 1&2, 3&6, 4&5, and 7&8, and since that isn't intuitive lots of cables are built incorrectly - they may work at short distances, but generally fail at high speeds (especially 1000 Mbps) or long distances.

Reterminate the cables correctly and you should be OK - the key word to search on is TIA/EIA-568 - there are two standards, both work but T568A is more common.
