Hi!

Corsair H80i GT.
5820k
Asrock X99 Extreme6
Corsair ValueSelect DDR4 2133

I have a shortage of 3 pin fan controllers and I want to connect H80i GT directly to PSU_FAN and not CPU_FAN (which will give me full 12V). Or I can connect it to a PWN fan that will run 12V. Then use the CPU_FAN as another 3 pin fan controller.

H80I GT requires full speed 12V already so it should not matter!

Can this cause any problems? The only one I can imagine is disabling warnings in the mobo.

Thanks :)

The reason that it uses the CPU Fan header is so that other parts of the motherboard monitoring systems are able to use it and possibly change the fan speed as and when it needs according to CPU load.

Seeing as CPU heat dissipation is pretty important, I wouldn't be tempted to plug it into other fan headers as they aren't used or controlled in the same way.

If you need more fan controllers - go buy a proper fan controller system or plug your fans into a molex adapter for power.

Recipe for disaster IMHO.

All other fans are controlled manually. What other systems could CPU_FAN RPM possibly influence? H80I does the cooling and monitoring itself. It just needs the 12V.

I still say its a recipe for disaster.

Sure, the H80 controls the speed of the internal pump for the controlling but it gets it's temperature sensor info from the CPU Fan header and makes the necessary adjustments for the fact it's a water pump as well as the radiator fans.

What if the ambient case temp is fine and tells the H80 to go into slow or even idle mode and your CPU fries itself?? Think about it!
There is a very good reason why certain headers are used for certain things.

Put it this way... I've been building systems since before Pentiums were available and I would never ever use a SYSFan header for a CPU fan.

But it's your choice and your money at risk.

To restate your point is:
H80i might use the FAN_RPM or voltage given by the mobo for the CPU_FAN header as info for internal processes.

Did I understood your point? :)

Seems unlikely, but I am not saying it is impossible.

(In Corsair Link you can control the fan speed and pump speed depending on radiator temperature.)

I am using a Corsair H80 myself.
Yes, the Corsair Link enables you to control them manually but the reference point is the feedback from the CPU Fan header.
