r7 250 with 250w psu

hi im looking to figure out if anyone knows if i can install my old r7 250 in my dad's old pc it has 6gb ddr3 ram and a amd phenom 2 x4 830 would a r7 250 work on the 250w psu in it it gpu will never be under load the pc is used for word processing browsing the internet and playing minecraft

i honestly dont know whether or not a r7 250 will work it is the low profile xfx version

A 380w power suply is recommended for the card.

But will probably run off a decent 300 to 350w.

250w is a little light.

It's a little too light if it did run the PSU wouldn't last long.

No, Its too low. The max tdp is about 75w so no. a r7 240 will do it,but i would go with a asus silent radeon 6450. its powerful but cheap.

I wouldn't recommend running it on a 250W PSU, especially OEM ones. If the system is put under gaming load (even though you mentioned that it will never be under load), then crashing, kernel power BSODs etc. will be expected. The CPU has a 95W max TDP and the R7 250 at a gaming load consumes 150W according to TH's own review.

Those 2 by themselves consume 245W of power. The GPU is supported by its motherboard due to its PCI-E X16 lane, but not recommended with such a PSU.

Like i said. it could work, but the tdp of 65 is a little risky for 250 watts. But hold on im gonna put it thru a watt calculator.

It will work, yes, try it out for yourself. I'm guessing your dad won't be doing intense gaming xD. However, upgrade it in the future (unless you're upgrading the whole PC!)

No it wont work. sorry. once he starts doing web browsing hes gonna get bsod. on the power calculator its 268 watts max load.

As SR-71 Blackbird said however, the PSU will be slowly deteriorating.

Yeah your right. But remember, if it says 250w its only able to output a lower amount. Like my rosewill power supply. it says 400w but ouputs only 374 to the graphics card /fans/pcie/ext., 24 to the motherboard, and 12 to the cpu.

I don't understand your wording. I'm guessing you're referring to the 12V rail/s. Yes, you are correct. However, the PSU's absolute maximum is actually higher than 250W.
