Hi all,

I currently have a Thermaltake Frio Overclocking cooler attached to my i5-2700k cpu. I am going to be upgrading the motherboard and cpu to a Gigabyte Z170X Gaming 7 and i7-6700k.

My question is this, can I take my Thermaltake Frio Cooler that is currently attached to the i5-2700k and attach it to the new i7-6700k or is it recommended that I buy a new cooler to go along with the new cpu?

I have been using the Thermaltake Frio Cooler since 2011 but I don't leave my rig on 24/7 I only use it several hours a day.

Thanks,

Derol

Solution
It should work OK. I'm using an old Thermalright Ultra Extreme on my Skylake CPU. The TDP between the i5 and the i7 are almost the same, so if it kept the i5 cool while overclocking, it shouldn't have a problem with the i7.

Solution
As long as the cooler has a mounting bracket for LGA 1156 or newer, and can actually handle a 95 Watt TDP or higher, it's fine. The mounting holes for mainstream Intel CPUs haven't changed since 2009, so older coolers do work fine. I'm using an old CoolerMaster Hyper N520 on my 6600k with no problems.

I did end up performing the upgrade and so far so good! I think the only issue will be me having to eventually replace the fans from the cooler.
