Solution

I would agree with this - if you already have a 4790K or a Z97 board then go ahead and buy. If not it makes no sense to buy new.

This is what I would recommend:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($244.78 @ OutletPC)
CPU Cooler: CRYORIG H5 Ultimate 76.0 CFM CPU Cooler ($46.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: ASRock Z170 Extreme6+ ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($179.99 @ Newegg)...

Get a i5 6600k. Skylake is amazing at overclocking; there's a reason for all the hype about it. You def. don't need a 850w PSU... Even a 500w could support this build. I would get the MSI M5 Z170A if you're gonna go with the 6600k.

I would go with 4x4GB HyperX Fury ram, and a Sapphire Nitro R9 390. 750w should be sufficent for this build.

Why? 2 x 8GB is always better than 4 x 4GB - less stress on the memory controller and you have room for an additional 2 x 8GB. I'm not a fan of Kingston RAM either - I would much prefer Corsair, G.Skill or Mushkin.

For 1080P you don't need anything more than a 970, and 750W is fine but 850W is there in case you want to (and should) SLI that 970 down the road.

A Sapphire R9 390 could beat a 970 anyday.
Almost 2 times the cores
Nitro
2 times the GDDR5
Sapphire Nitro is optimized for 1080p as well as 4K

I would say that instead of that mouse you go for something a bit cheaper like a g300, just so you could put some more money in something else. Also I don't see headphones or speakers which I would personally need.

All this feedback got me thinking. Why not just go with the I7 6700k build and eat the cost premium over the I5 6600k?

To do this I went with a lower cost:

  • • Case
    • SSD
    • Memory
    • Power Supply
    • Keyboard & Mouse

CPU: I7 6700k ($370)
CPU Cooler: CRYORIG H7 49.0 CFM CPU Cooler ($47)
GPU: MSI Radeon R9 390 8GB ($330)
Motherboard: Asus Z170-A ATX LGA1151 ($150)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws 4 series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 ($70)
SSD: Crucial BX100 250GB 2.5" SSD ($67)
HD: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM ($50)
PS: EVGA 750W 80+ Gold ($100)
Case: Deepcool TESSERACT ($50)
Optical Drive: (DVD) Asus DRW-24B1ST/BLK/B/AS DVD/CD Writer ($20)
Mouse & Keyboard: Cooler Master OCTANE w/Optical Mouse ($60)
Monitor: Asus VG248QE ($250)
