Both are decent cards, but I'd go with the 960 if it isn't much more as it is a lot more powerful when it come to gaming.

If you can get the 4 gigabyte version it would help a good amount in reducing stuttering as 2GB cards are becoming obsolete in AAA gaming as of late. (Due to the high amount of stutter that comes with having insufficient vRAM)

I have the ASUS stryx 4GB card and i love it. I haven't even overclocked it and i've run CSGO, rust and Elder Scrolls at the same time and get ~30 frames on rust/ESO while there both active. (keep in mind that was a while back when rust was way worse. Today it is way more cleaned up.) I play 1080p on a 60hz monitor. Its all you really need. I wouldn't even bother getting a 970. Nice if you have it but unless you going all out $1,000 bucks USD to drop on a GPU with some crazy LGA-2011 build, 960 is fine. That said if you find a deal on a 970 or its like 20-40 bucks more grab it.

Although you may play some games that require more. I also do real well with batman arkham night. A 970 would do better. But for all the shit people talk the game is definitely more than playable on the 960.

When I was getting a GPU alot of people recommended a 280x, not sure how much they go for though.

So, you say that 2GB is not good enough? Can it run Assassins Creed Unity or Metal Gear Solid V : The Phantom Pain, or other good games without lag?
I wanted a 2GB Graphic card because of the budget but I also want it to run smoothly as well. And I thought having 16GB of RAM was enough for running these games smooth.

I still run AC unity and MGSVTPP on my laptop of 4 gb ram and 2 gb "gt 830m" notebook graphics. But it runs a bit slow and lag. so, I was going for a CPU with these:

Deepcool Dukase Mid Tower Case
AMD FX-8350 processor
MSI 970 Gaming Motherboard
Vengeance Pro Series - 16GB(2 x 8GB)DDR3 DRAM 1866MHz
Seagate 2TB STA HDD
Asus Strix GeForce GTX960 2GB
Corsair RM850 Watts 80 PLUS Gold PSU

Won't they be compatible with each other?

Have 8GB as one stick of ram and MGSV runs perfectly fine. The 4GB version of the card is only like 5-10 more dollars when I bought it anyway. I would imagine it would be fine with a 2GB card the reason I went with the 4GB version and he is saying too also is because you don't know what the future holds so it should last a bit longer than a 2GB card. There are some games out now that ask for more VRAM even if it is just for recommended specifications. 99% of the time I have been perfectly alright and im not going to go cry cause batman AK dropped frames in one sequence when there was a lot going on on the screen. That 16 gigs is system ram. VRAM is dedicated to the video card.

RAM doesn't really affect performance in FX type CPU's, as long as you have enough it's good enough. (And adding more won't give you a tangible performance increase)

A 960 2GB is good enough, but 4GB of vram is preferred if it is not much more expensive (But if it is a lot more expensive just forget it), the thing is with 2GB's in this generation is that if the vram needed exceeds that buffer the system is forced to load and unload the textures between the card's VRAM and the computer's ram which is known to cause extra stutters ingame (But not always, as proven by benchmarks) unlike the 4GB card in which it only has to load the textures once.

8GB stick of ram? You already said you had two 8GB sticks of ram for a total of 16GB no? That will probably be better than what I have, especially because it will run in dual channel.
