Can you upgrade any part of your computer (except the HHD and/or SSD that your files and OS are on) and everything will work the same (except performance increase)? Example: can you upgrade your motherboard with no repercussions and only the performance gains, or would something like that screw with your OS and/or files?

Solution
Changing the motherboard pretty much requires a reinstall of the OS. When Windows is installed it sets up a lot of drivers that will cause multiple issues. All the other components are easy to swap out and for something like the GPU, just needs an easy driver update or re-install. I have never successfully upgraded a motherboard without OS problems. Most of the time it wont boot, but I had a few that booted but the performance was atrocious and lead to blue screens. Reinstalling Windows means reinstalling your programs/games and needing to backup your files.

It might screw with your OS and bios and OC settings. I have had it from experience. The OS is tied to your original hardware. What you would have to to is check bios and set your preferred settings and check that it does not show the OS as not genuine p. You can call Microsoft to deactivate OS.
