Hi. I am going nuts trying to find a smart tv external box to turn my regular Toshiba flat screen (regular) into a smart tv and will also read from my WD 2tb passport. I am out of luck finding this. I would even settle for 1tb. But definitely need something to read a large amount of data without skipping.

I also need (and not sure if I should buy a combo or two different units) that will stream enough channels so I can disconnect my cable tv. I have a brandy new pc I built (it's a charm), and a fast internet cable connection, and an old linksys router that works just fine (or do I need another wireless usb to plug into my pc)? I would want to set up the streaming config in the living room (living room currently has tv/stereo/cable box, i.e. no access to watch movies from ext hdd) and bedroom currently has tv/pc screen combo switch, pc, router, modem, cable box.

Also, although I'm really tech savvy in some areas, I am clueless when it comes to wireless, i.e. bluetooth, android, etc., because I am the only person on the planet who doesn't have a smart phone. And.... would I need to buy extra devices, i.e. extra keyboard, cables, etc.

Any help would be beyond appreciated! Thank you so much! :)

am i reading this right that you're pc is in the living room with the tv? if so there is the answer to your question. simply use hdmi to connect the pc to the tv and use it as a second (first?) monitor. stream , play stuff from a hdd or whatever else with the pc as the base of the operation.

as for the bedroom a Roku set-top box will allow that tv to connect to the wifi to stream whatever apps you wish and will read the usb drive. not sure if there is a max size for the drive though as FAQ does not say https://support.roku.com/hc/en-us/articles/208754908-Roku-Media-Player-Playing-your-personal-videos-music-photos

you could also get multiple roku boxes and hook one to each tv and move the hdd around as needed. and as you mentioned...

i have a sony blueray player and it will play back files from a disk or a hdd and it also has a handful of apps built in like netflix, hulu amazon and youtube. won't have them all as it is not what it is for but it has the basic popular ones.

forgot about that feature on the BR player, good call bringing that up.
