So I read on this thread somewhere that some one had successfully installed a GTX 950 in the Alienware x51 r1 with the 330w psu and everything ran fine. I just recently attempted the same upgrade and I am having problems. I uninstalled all the drivers before installing the new card. With the new card in the PC is very slow and will boot to windows but then freezes. It will just sit on my desktop and show the working symbol. I've let it stay idle for over an hour and it does nothing. I'm not very PC savvy, so any help would be much appreciated. Also I think I should note that its an i7...

Thanks in advance!

Try doing a software cleanup. Run DDU from safe mode and remove any Nvidia and AMD gfx drivers and their remnants it finds: http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/display_driver_uninstaller.html
Next, run CCleaner and do the Clean and Registry portions both: https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner
Then, disable as much stuff as possible that you have starting with Win. Check your Tray area for stuff you can do w/o.
That should at least satisfy that there isn't a software issue causing problems. Finally, boot to the desktop with the card and no drivers installed. Win will load a generic driver. Let's see if we get that far.

While Nvidia suggests a 350W PSU minimum for their GTX 950, your 330W should not be an issue that would cause that kind of problem when simply at the desktop. It sounds like some sort of conflict. Nevertheless, can you read the +12V rail(s)'s specs on the PSU?

Awesome! Thanks for the reply! I did the software clean up and the CCleaner as you suggested and it booted up after that. I went through Nvidia and downloaded the proper drivers and ran a game to test it out (XCOM 2 if it matters) the game ran great, a little choppy during the cut scenes but i think thats due to a game mod i have installed. Was able to play it for several hours with no issues, it did crash once, but i got a steam error message so I'm not entirely sure it was the card. Gonna run it through the paces again tonight and see what happens, ill give you and update soon. Thanks again for the help!
