I7 4790k extremely high idle temps (50c and 65c)

Okay,

So I have a i7 4790k CPU VCORE of 1.185 I believe. A few months ago I had perfect temps but I checked a week ago and now I have idle temps with h100i of 50c and with stock cooler they are 65c IDLE, when rendering videos with h100i temps are 60c. This part is fine.

I am going to list my bios settings in the images below as I am stuck at what to do now after reseating and trying different coolers, updating bios etc. Please help.

Your vcore is 1.185v which is well within safe limits and not overly high. The other you were looking at was vrin which is something else, not your core voltage. It sounds like the cooler isn't mounted properly or possibly the h100i pump is plugged into the cpu fan control causing the pump speed to fluctuate. The pump should be powered off a header with 100% full speed, then the cooling fans controlled by the cpu_fan header to allow them to spin slower/faster as needed according to the temp curve in the bios.

If you touch both hoses are they similar in temp or is one noticeably hotter than the other? They should be similar temps. You can try cleaning off the thermal paste with a lint free cloth like a coffee filter and some isopropyl rubbing alcohol and reapply thermal paste. Make sure the cooler is mounted properly to the cpu, go back through the instructions etc.

If the hoses are draped across one another, half looped, you may need to unmount the radiator and give it a turn one direction or the other so the hoses aren't draped over each other. Other users have had that issue in the past with that cooler and simply unlooping the hoses caused temps to drop over 20c. Aio coolers can be kind of finicky.

That's an extremely high overclock voltage.
The H100i can't really put up very well with that amount of heat coming off the CPU, so around 55c idle is to be expected.
Around load you should expect temps around the 75-85 range.
I'd suggest downclocking the CPU to around 1.35 vcore for cooler temps.

Oh, my bad, OP said 1.885 in text post, and I couldn't load the pics :p give this guy best answer!

Okay so how can you explain that he stock cooler is having temps of 65c? I am going to re install my h100i tonight after having it left out for a while and the tubes have been moved around. All wires were and will be connected correctly and It can't be the contact as this is the first time I've taken the cooler back off and I have only just started having these problems

There is nothing running in the background, load is at 0% with spikes to 3ish%

How do you have the fans set up? Do they turn up when the temperature rises or are they at a set speed?

They were set of custom curve (speed up over temp rise) but even at full speed they did not cool the cpu down. Like i said i am using the stock cpu at the moment for testing, this was to check it was not my cooler pump problem/failure. Still getting high temps.

Could it be becuase i have 4 sticks of DDR3 RAM set at 1866 instead of the optimized default of 1333. (THE RAM SUPPORTS 1866) This could be effecting my V-CORE for my CPU? So i have read

Having the RAM "overclocked" can raise CPU temps but I would think that would only be slight, you could try downclocking them to 1600Mhz if they have a profile for that.
Firstly though, try power saving mode in windows, see if the idle temps drop.

I'm going to try the power saving options as soon as i get home and then look at resetting my BIOS settings and hope this fixes the temps. They RAM might be changing its power automatically and this might effect the CPU but i will find out. I will also run my CPU V-core on auto if i have that option

Good luck :)

I will report back later of my results

The vcore does have an effect on cpu temps, but the vcore is really low according to the bios screenshot. Low as in normal, not an oc'd vcore. The h100i should be capable of handling the cpu with a vcore closer to 1.3v and oc'd to around 4.6 or 4.7ghz, much less 1.185v and stock clocks.

What is the rest of the pc build, including the case brand/model, how many case fans and their position and what sort of ambient room temps is the pc running with? Stock coolers can have a difficult time cooling the cpu due to the plastic push pin retention system. If there's a slight flaw in the pins, if all 4 pins aren't locked entirely through the motherboard etc. Usually it helps to press and lock 2 pins at a time from opposite corners, then press and lock the other 2 pins diagonal from one another to help ensure it seats flush/flat to the cpu and not crooked at all.

Similar issues can happen with the aio cooler, there are times it may seem to be mounted flat to the cpu when it actually may not be entirely. That can contribute to cooling issues. How much thermal paste was used? How was it applied? Just suggestions of things to double check. Everything else, even the ram at 1866mhz all sound pretty typical, the only issue seems to be the cooling.

Hi, I have now installed my h100i back on.

I think i know the reason for the high temps but cant seem to fix it myself within the BIOS.

As you can see in the screenshot my cpu Voltage is constantly at 1.185 and it does not decrease when idle.

The CPU also always throttles up to the 4.4 when idle as well. When i disable the throttle the temps drop a bit but the V-core stays the same. I only want it to throttle when it needs the power which it used to do a few months ago.

The V-CORE should lower when idle.

Windows power settings are on power save mode so its not this.

I'm using gigabyte BIOS so everything is different to the other manufactures settings

Yeah i know, the gigabyte BIOS is so annoying as its all different to every other BIOS. I am in contact with technical support for gigabyte anyway so i will try and get an answer and post it here

Okay, good luck
