I am planning to upgrading my Fx 6300 and Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 to a i5 4690k and a Asus Z97-A. I have an OEM version of Windows 7 and I had heard that I would need to remove Windows 7 from my hard drive before updating so I have a few questions:

1. Do I need to purchase a new copy of Windows 7?

2.Do I need to format my hard drive to get rid of my current Windows 7?

Solution
Most data that applies to your profile (your files, saved games, emails, etc) are stored under the USERS folder on your C: drive. You will need to take ownership of the folder before backing it up but you should be able to copy it to an external drive. Here are instructions on how...

Once you have it backed up then you can format your drive, install Windows, Install your rpograms (MS-Office, Games, Flash Player, Java, etc) then restore your profile under the USERS folder.

Hope this helps. There are many third party apps out there that will do this for you. You might consider buying one.

1. Do I need to purchase a new copy of Windows 7?

YES, if you got an OEM because OEMs only give you one license.

2.Do I need to format my hard drive to get rid of my current Windows 7?

Not, really (but I recommend it). You can do an Any Time Update to bring your current windows to genuine using the key from your new purchase.

This should help...
