How can I program my modem to only work with one device. My kids want their phones too but I don't.

I'm trying to make it so there can only be one device used. I could change the password but they can get that. I thought someway I can program it to work on only my computer. Or not being able to go wireless. I know that you can push a button to turn on/off wireless ( to easy)

I'm assuming you're talking about WiFi?

I don't think they should be able to get the password unless someone tells them it, or they have access to a PC with it loaded.

You could use the MAC address blacklist or whitelist, but it's not very secure - they can probably get past it if they do a little googling.

You can turn on MAC filtering and add your computer/device's address to the exception list. A MAC address is a device specific "serial" number, if you will, so with MAC filtering on, only the addresses you add to the list will be able to even connect,

All of the routers that I've worked with, this has been a pretty simple task. From the router's settings (sometimes inside the MAC filtering menu,) you can see which devices are connected; and simply add them to the list from there. Otherwise, you might need to manually find your computer's address and add it by hand. In any case, I would advise against turning the filter setting on until you add your device to the list first. Otherwise, it will lock out everything; and you'll have to reset the router to connect back.

Alternatively, you could change the password and hide your network so that it isn't visible for them to connect to. Though, that might not work if they've already connected and stored the connection in their devices...

Change the wifi encryption key and set a new admin login password for the router. You will then have sole access to the wifi. Set up your computer and other devices with access passwords so the key cannot be read from them.

If you mean for it to work on only one wired computer, then simply turn off the wifi.

There's no such thing as a 'secure' wireless network. Anybody can learn, or use an easily quicksearched tool to circumnavigate whatever countermeasures you use to 'secure' a home network; therefore, your point is moot.

I'll also point out, that these are his/her kids - not an experienced admin. Given that the OP is simply looking to lock them out, the point still stands that hiding the network will prevent them from even using a password that they obtain to begin with.

Either way you slice it, if they want it bad enough; they're going to get back in. I believe Pooneil has the easiest solution here. I overlooked the "or not being able to go wireless" line. Simply disabling the broadcast option will do it for sure - though that also blocks OP from using WiFi.

If you have good keys, don't give them out, and disable WPS, then WPA2-Personal is pretty damn difficult to crack.

Even then, 'you cannot be perfect' is not a reason to give up on being better.
