Windows 10 upgrade is preventing startup. Can't even enter BIOS.

Hey guys!

So i'm using the ASUS P8-z77 V-Pro mobo (http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/LGA1155/P8Z77-V_PRO/E7198_P8Z77-V_PRO.pdf)

I have my primary (and only) SSD (Samsung 840 PRO 128G) currently connected to the Asmedia SATA port, instead of the intel SATA ports on my mobo. (check mobo layout contents in linked PDF for specifics)

When I tried upgrading to windows 10, the restart process failed. The system would freeze at the BIOS splash. No keyboard inputs worked. I couldn't even enter BIOS. Shutting on & off did nothing.

I removed my SSD, reformatted it at a friend's house, and fresh-installed windows 7 again. Everything has been smooth since.

I can't seem to find anyone who's encountered the same problem.

I want to try and upgrade to Windows 10 again (which, overall is a better OS, right? Up for debate!), but I can't run the risk of a system failure again as I no longer live near friends for plan B. Is/could the type of SATA port it's connected to cause the failure? Suprised the SSD affected the BIOS functionality at all actually.

UPDATE: Found some more info on the ASMEDIA SATA ports I'm using, making it much more likely that my setup is causing the error:

"ASMedia® PCIe SATA 6Gb/s controller**- 2 x SATA 6Gb/s ports with port multiplier support* Supports on Intel® Core™ processor family with Windows® 7 operating systems.** These SATA ports are for data hard drives only. ATAPI devices are not supported."

Is it safe to say plugging it into the intel SATA ports will resolve the issue?

Why are you using the Asmedia ports in the first place ? Their performance isn't as good as the Intel ports on z-77.

BTW I am running 10 on my SSD and using the native sata ports vs Asmedia. Our boards are similar as far as hardware and bios so it should work. Also make sure your KB and mouse is plugged into the USB 2 ports and not the USB 3 ports. Those need drivers that load after the windows HAL.

I actually have ran into an issue extremely similar to this. I had someone in the community bring up a point NO ONE else ever did it took me months, and it all came down to a corrupted bios that was causing issues with my Samsung Evo 840 Evo. I thought it was either a cable or a bad Sata port on my Mobo etc. I couldn't for the life of me figure it out. I know alot of people frown at flashing their bios due to the risk, but if your board came with the EZ Asus flash utility it's honestly just a click away to flash the bios, but I would definitely have someone walk you though the process or read your mobo manual if this is something you decide to look into. Just saying it's an idea.

It was my first build, and the blue ports looked cool and special. Noobie mistake.

You've given me the courage to try again. Hope it works. Will pick best answer if it does!

They have windows 10 drivers for your MB so it should work, if you get stuck clear your CMOS via the jumper and retry. It SHOULD work no prob though, I have run windows 10 since beta with NO install issues. Upgraded from 8 and also clean installed.
