Don't know if the problem is with my PSU or motherboard...

Ok so basically I've been having this problem where once my computer is turned off, it won't turn on again. To get it to turn on I have to fiddle about with the insides and keep pushing in random cables and turning the power supply off and on again until it will finally start one time.

Once it's started there are no problems until it is turned off again.

What used to work is that I used to turn off the power to the computer, and hold the power button for 1 minute. Then turn the power back on and voila it would work. However recently, it's been acting really weird.

Today, as I went to turn OFF the power to the psu, halfway through flipping the button into off switch, the computer started up. It's like the sudden change in power jumpstarted the PC or something. I also heard a weird noise that I think is from the PSU.

I'm leaning towards the PSU having a problem but what do you guys think?

TL;DR: Key things to note:

- PC is fine once it finally turns on
- Sometimes turning OFF the power to the PSU causes the PC to jumpstart to life for a bit, like the PSU is leaking power or something
- Sometimes pushing in 24pin Mobo cable helps to turn it on
- When the computer wont turn on, Mobo light is still on which means it should be receiving power.
- Overheating is not an issue. I have decent cooling and the temps are fine.

Specs:
- XFX 650W Bronze Edition Semi Modular PSU
- Asus z87 Plus motherboard
- 8GB of Kingston Hyperx ram
- GTX 770
- Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO

Thanks for any help

Try to eliminate the front panel. Maybe it has something to do with a faulty power button/2pin power button mobo connection? If you turn it off, and simply trip the power switch with a screwdriver as opposed to using the front panel power button, will it work every time?

It really could be a variety of things.

As mentioned, if you bypass the front panel power button, by jumping the two pins it connects to with a paperclip or screwdriver, can you turn it on and off reliably?

Next, how old is the PSU? If it's older (more than 4 years old) it could be having issues which affect all PSUs regardless of the quality (and XFX does make some good PSUs). Capacitors can dry out, especially if you're putting them under a high load.

No, my motherboard has a Power Button and pressing that does not turn the computer on either :(

The PSU is actually not very old at all. It's only about a year and a half old. However, i suspect it's been faulty all along as I used to always have problems with the computer not starting sometimes, and sometimes it would turn off randomly and restart itself. When I turn the power to the PSU off, it sometimes makes a static noise... I never returned it though because it was my first build and it was actually a lot of hassle to put it together because I had a DOA Mobo first time round, and I didn't want to disassemble everything for a 3rd time..

Yeah, sometimes turning the power off from the PSU switch makes a static noise. I never thought anything of it but I realise there have been a lot of warning signs towards the PSU acting up. It's not a bad PSU though so thats probably why its not taken down all my other parts with it so far lol
