Unfortunately I spend a lot of time in a place with internet that doesn't really fit my needs (aka not reliable, barely works) but there's a Wi-Fi hotspot not too far which I can sometimes connect if I'm in the right place (low signal strength still, but I can connect) but I can only be in that spot for a short while. The farthest I'm ever away from where I assume the hotspot is, is about 1000 feet. There are walls in between me and it, so I'm not expecting to get the full 1000 feet, but I'd like some more flexibility of being able to connect to it.
Not looking to spend more than 150$, and it does need to be pretty portable. Thanks!

It is easy enough to find an adapter that will improve the wifi compared to the built in wifi on most computers. I have no specific adapter to recommend but here is the best resource I know of to see what is available. Buy from a retailer with a customer friendly return policy in case it doesn't do enough.

Since you are at the margin of wifi performance a new adapter may or may not be satisfactory. The fallback would be to tether to a smartphone or get a USB LTE adapter.
