I am starting my first build sometime this month and I just bought a Fractal Design Define R5 case. It has its own fan controller connected by a SATA power connector. I also have my PSU which is the EVGA SuperNova 750W P2. I connected the SATA to the fan controller connector and the fans were plugged into the system as well. I turned on the PSU and the fans were not turning on.
Is it because I need a motherboard to turn the system on?
I am not completely sure how this works.
The PSU fan also does not turn on too.
Please help me out with this and fill me in.
Thanks!

A PSU won't power on unless the 20/24 pin connector is plugged in to a motherboard.

If you need to "turn on" your PSU when it is not connected to a motherboard you need to perform the "paper clip" trick. You simply grab a metal paper clip, bend it to the shape of a U and slide it in the pins with the green cable and the black cable(there's usually 2 black cable pins from memory, it doesn't matter which one you use) found on the 20/24pin motherboard connector. There are actual aftermarket "clips" you can buy that basically do it for you as well.

If you need just google "psu paper clip trick" and you'll get quite a few detailed guides on how to do it.
