Specs:
Cpu i5 4690k
mobo: msi z97 gaming 5
GPU: MSI r9 390
PSU:corsair cx500
Ram: Kingston hyper x fury 8gb 1866

So just a couple hours ago I downloaded a new game off steam and wanted to try it out. I noticed a kind of buzzing noise that was almost like a hum and decided to look up what it could be. So far I'm guessing it's a coil whine based on what I've read. The noise only occurs during playing a game. I'm guessing it's the power supply since it's only 500w, the sound hasn't happened since recently and hasn't given me much problems till now. If I were to upgrade my psu would it help ? Please help and the noise is kind of irritating.

Do you think that'll fix the whine? What psu do you suggest under 80?

I have a spare Msi gtx 970 and decided to see if there would be any difference in my rig. Plugged it in, loaded up witcher 2 and same noise occured, not as loud but still noticeable.

It's coming from both gpus, could the cause of it be the psu though? If I were to replace it would it elimate the sound? I tried putting it into power saver mode, there's no whine but I drop to like 20 fps in game

As I said its possible it's the PSU. It's not a PSU I would use in a gaming or overclocking environment especially with a card like the 390. Either you have 2 cards with coil whine(unlikely) or something else is causing it and a PSU can cause coil whine. I'd replace the PSU anyway and if it takes care of the coil whine in the process call it a bonus. The Cx500 is going to fail under that kinda load and while they aren't known for taking other parts out it's not unheard of.

Umm... Dont order that one. Evga has some goo to excellent units but that isn't one of them. The 750w B2 is much better and costs about the same. Here's some better options that don't cost much more but are much better quality.

Solution

There have been known situations where people have replaced PSUs with better ones and it actually stopped the GPU coil whine altogether.
