Hi, first time builder confused as hell with PSU selection here. Sorry for yet-another-psu thread.
What's the problem? I've selected a Silverstone 450W unit, since adding up components' wattage (as closely as possible since not all manufacturers provide this info) and additionally consulting online calculators all confirmed the consumption should be around 400, if not below.
Then there are other calculators and GPU manufacturer who all recommend 500+ PSUs. I wouldn't mind going with a larger one, but since the box is intended to be a server first (24/7 uptime) and a gaming rig second, then efficiency is fairly important. Going with overkill PSU would be too ineffective when the system is close to idle.

Note that the system will be running on unraid and all gaming is to be done in a virtual machine, meaning GPU is essentially turned off when the vm is shut down.

Few calculator screenshots:

From these I conclude that overclocking would be no-go, but other than that, 450 should suffice.
Note that newegg calculator recommended whopping 588W and GPU spec page suggested 500W PSU.

What's the correct approach here? Am I mistaken that 500W (say this Silverstone) would be too inefficient when the server is idling?

Thanks in advance.

I personally do not know, so i won't say anything about that. But for the 500W, it's definitely not unreasonable to get one. You could probably get a 500W thats better than the 450W SFX in your list currently e.g. the EVGA 550 G2/GS

The best PSU calculator, http://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator, recommends 400W. It will draw no more than 350W at load, so 450 should be just fine unless you will do some major overclocking.
That SFX PSU is good and is well enough for your system.

Although i'm pretty sure you can fit full-sized PSU's in the Node 304, So you could get a better EVGA 550 G2 PSU, or an XFX TS 450/550.

Would you have a rough idea what could be the power consumption if the server is running some HTPC docker containers (ie plex, sickrage, sonarr) without the gaming vm running? I'm just curious whether the 500 or 500W would be too unreasonable for those lower consumption periods.

Wouldn't 550W really be overkill? For overclocking it'd be necessary, but otherwise...
