I currently own a 27" BenQ Freesync 1440p 144hz monitor, and just last week I upgraded my computer to http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/v84GWZ .
I am currently torn between getting a GTX 970, or the R9 390. I have always been a long time supporter of Nvidia, so my heart is learning towards the GTX970, but I was wondering if it would be worth going the r9 390 route to take advantage of both Freesync, and 8gb VRAM for 1440p gaming. I have always been a fan that Geforce has day one patches...and have heard a few horror stories about AMD's GPU support.

My budget is around the $500CAN mark.

Get the 390. First of all youll be able to take advantage of freesync, and the 8 gigs of vram isnt a huge thing but I would rather have 8 gigs then 4. Especially if you're going to be playing 1440p games. And the 390 is newer then the 970(not a big deal but still). And for the horror stories... Its an electronic. Evert brand will have issues. You may get the 390 and have no issues, or you may have nothing but problems. And the same goes for the 970. The 390 is still a very good card.
