Hello Good evening,

I have a couple of questions around the cpu and performance of my computer i'm a real novice about this stuff & would be grateful for any help.

I have a packard bell G5800 Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 860 @ 2.80GHz (8 CPUs), ~2.8GHz, I've had it for quite a few years and have been upgrading the memory and graphics card over time, my previous card was nvidia gtx 580 which was great & I decided to upgrade to the gtx 980 which was in my price range.

I can play most games at 1080p on ultra or very high and some games at 4k but have noticed that I cannot watch 4k movies on you tube without the video having slight stutters, which isn't due to buffering as I allow the video to load and other 4k media that I try to watch.

Forgive my ignorance but is my card capable of playing 4k media ? if so is this down to my cpu ?

I am looking to get the oculus rift , my pc passes all the tests except for the cpu but passes all the tests on the steam HTC Vive test , If i didn't upgrade my cpu would the rift work?

If I do need to upgrade what cpu should I get I didn't know that not all cpu are the same so I don't want to buy the wrong one by mistake.

If I need to i'll pay whats needed but would like to keep price as low as possible .

thanks for any advice

David

Solution
The problem is that we really don't know the true needs of OR to get a fluid playing experience with games that have yet to be released. Your CPU is slowish, and is enough generations old for it to matter. If you have the PSU that came with your system still in, it has aged a lot and I expect its main capacitors to have little 'goodie' left.

You would be replacing an old CPU with a somewhat younger, somewhat faster CPU, and it will cost a fair bit unless second hand. I think your money would be better spent on a new system, salvaging everything you can. If your budget is too low, then start saving.
