Can shorting and damage occur when the power cord is not probably plugged in?

Hey guys, so I came across a situation a couple of time when the power cord wasn't properly plugged into the power supply, or the other one to my monitor and it caused that cringing noise of electricity, like something is getting scratched. I of course then plugged it back in better and it stops. But can that cause actual damage to the components be it power supply or monitor?
Thank you!

weather it could potentially damage your machine or not I cannot answer for sure, but what I can tell you is that I have done this several times on accident (seems my power cord is just slightly too small for the outlet) and i've notice no adverse effects.

But the sound really scares you right?

yea the crinkly sound almost sounds like very soft white noise static... its scary but I'm sure it will be fine, IF you start having issues then I would do research but I think your probably safe.

It's fine, components protect themselves from spikes. This I not a spike however. I'm sure that you've experienced the same sound when plugging in a cable into the wall socket, or even seen sparks. I do all the time. As soon you start hearing it when nothing is lose, or see it frequent while plugged in, that's when you should replace the cable and or the device, arcing is perfectly safe. I'm writing this because some people have no electrician background and would tell you to replace it because its dangerous...

Thanx for the great response! My monitor's power socket is vertical, so the power cord has to be plugged in vertical as well. But the wire makes a weird bend because it comes in contact with the bottom bezel of the monitor. With every move i make, I can hear that arcing you explained before. If i attempt to move the panel up down or side to side, most of the times the device turns off and on again multiple times with that arcing happening. What causes the problem? Is it the way the power socket distorts the cable, or is it something more serious?
