Upgrading my current build.

Basically, I've recently got back into PC gaming after being sidetracked for a while. What I've currently got is a pretty basic build. I only recently upgraded my GPU from a GTX 760 to a Gigabyte GTX 980Ti G1 Gaming, as well as purchasing a small SSD in addition to the current 1TB HDD. The CPU is a i7-4770 (Stupidly opted against the 4770k), 8GB RAM and a Z87-K motherboard. What I'm looking to do is slowly upgrade the components until I'm optimized, to an extent, for 4K. What should I be considering upgrading to achieve this?
After hovering around, I've figured out I may as well get your input, seeing as I'm fairly inexperienced! As well as upgrading these components I'm really looking to tidy my build and gain a professional kind of look. What should I be taking into mind when attempting to achieve this? Is it reliant on a motherboard/case only? And finally how beneficial will watercooling be, would it be worth my time?
Quite an essay ay, much appreciative in advance for anyone who takes the time out to help :)

Best case the price cuts will be around $100, but no doubt they will be reasonably substantial given the pascal performance increase nd memory. Assuming these 980tis are of the same model, overclocking them should do very nicely for you! Although honestly at this point a single 980ti is more than enough for maxed out 144hz 1080p gaming. If you can, I'd personally refund the second card, as it will drop by a large margin in the coming...

Seeing as you're going for top of the line performance, there isn't a very practical way currently to game at high frame rates at 4k on high detail settings. For this i'd 110% wait for the new Pascal line of Nvidia GPUs to be released in June.
If you're not up for the wait though, Nvidia will be unveiling these chips in April at GTC, at which point the 980tis will drop considerably in price meaning you can pick up an SLI configuration if you want, with the Pascal release heavily speculated to be at Computex 2016 offering very large performance increase with the implementation of high amounts of memory and HBM2.

TLDR: If you're really eager to upgrade to 4k, wait till April for a 980ti price cut. If you can wait, get an aftermarket pascal card when they release in June.

In all honesty I couldn't resist the wait. Already purchased one of the 980Ti's and will probably SLI around April. I'm just trying to get an idea of what I can do at the moment to get the best out of the single GPU.
Although you've got me panicking now, how considerable could this price cut be?

Whatever decision you make, don't look back! :D Good luck!

You've given me a right kick in the teeth, I've been buzzing with this card the past few days now I'm contemplating returning it! :heink: much appreciated though mate!

Sorry! :p
But at least now you can hype yourself up over maxed out 60+fps 4k with a single GPU! :)
Also the good part is that once you get your hands on the pascal you can still sell the 980ti for a meaty amount on /r/hardwareswap or ebay.
Enjoy!
