I am building a PC and can't decide on a cpu.I am stuck between spending extra money on an i5 6600k or overclocking the i5 6500. I am only using this pc for gaming. Here are the rest of my pc components:
GPU:R9 380X
RAM: Depends on cpu
MOBO: Depends on cpu
PSU: EVGA 500w 80+
HDD:Western Digital blue 1tb 7200rpm
CPU: pending
Case: Bitfenix comrade ATX tower

I have heard that the i5 6500 can be overclocked on certain Z170 motherboards, is this true? If it is would it be possible for me to overclock it enough to either match the performance of the i5 6600k or at least get really close?

i5 6500 is officially not OCable, yes, there should be mobos, which can do that.

For those, who already OCed that processor: pay a good attention to any updates you are installing! I heard that Intel wanna close the possibility to OC non-K Skylake through base frequency for good. It should be most-likely a BIOS update.

i5 6600k is still a lot better OCable due to the open multiplier. If you are planning to OC, I would recommend to get i5 6600k better than i5 6500.
