Hi,

I wish to build two systems, install XenServer on both the systems to create a cluster. The following is the configuration that I am looking at for each system --

  • CPU Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler Noctua NH-L9x65 33.8 CFM CPU Cooler
Motherboard Asus Z170-A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
    Memory G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 64GB (4 x 16GB) DDR4-3000 Memory
Storage 127GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (for base OS install)
Case Fractal Design Define R4 w/Window (Black Pearl) ATX Mid Tower Case
Power Supply EVGA SuperNOVA NEX 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply
    Wired Network Adapter TP-Link TG-3468 10/100/1000 Mbps PCI-Express x1 Network Adapter

Purpose: Build XenServer cluster at home. The primary purpose of these systems will be to host multiple VMs that processes massive amount of data (50+G/week) and serve large amount of graphics. Some of the VMs are hardware intensive and they will easily need 20-25GB ram and really fast (possibly quard core?) processors.
I am also looking for RAID based really fast backend storage with 20TB storage capacity (since the VMs need high read speed) that doesn't cost me arms and legs. I would like to spend about $1000-$1200 on it.

It would be awesome if hardware gurus can guide me and help me make the right hardware choices.

Thanks!

Solution
You only have a quad core CPU. For virtualization, I would get an X99 and 5820K CPU -- 6 physical cores. Your RAM would still be OK.
