Hi...I'm getting "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable." message.
Company requirement is to encrypt any external drive before using it so I did that per their guidance - this was 6 months ago. I had no problem accessing my files until yesterday.

User Support people did chkdsk /f but it didn't fix it.

Do you have any solutions?
tnx

i've got eight of the seagate backup slim 2 tb drives i use to backup video files to. Had them for about 2 years, and a few months back, iirst one then the other started doing weird things, like dropping off when backing up large files to it -
oddly both of those will work fine if i move the cable to a USB 2.0 port connection. And its not the 3.0 port as everything else i plug into that port, including any of the other seagate backup slim HDDs. The only thing i can figure is the USB to sata circuit board adaptor is defective.

If all else suggested above fails, google on youtube for opening up that seagate case (there are a ton of videos) and pull the 2.5" HDD out of the case and connect it directly via a sata cable, just to make sure...
Hi there miag14,

I would agree with popatim. In case you've backed your data up, just reformat the drive. It may be a good idea to test it with of these afterwards, as the drive may be failing: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility

In case you don't have back ups, you can give Ubuntu a try. Just boot up from a CD or a flash drive and see if the drive would be accessible. Check this thread out: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/267999-32-recover-data-mode

Hope this will help,

If it is in that usb to sata circuit board, you should be able to recover your data and save that hdd

When you pull it out, if you haven't watched the "how to" videos, there's a pc of foil tape covering from the circuit board onto the hdd, that will give the impression the circuit board is one pc with the HDD - it's not - they just used standard laptop HDDs

hope that helps
