I am fairly new to PC Gaming and custom PC's. I have an issue where I get graphic stretches on certain games, I already looked for a fix and apparently my graphics card is most likely corrupt since I bought it used. I need help on choosing a better graphics card that isn't AMD. I want to get an Nvidia GeForce. Is the GTX 970 a good upgrade from my current graphics card?

Will it give me an overall better performance?

My current PC Specs:

-Intel Core i5-4460 Processor
-Stock Intel CPU Cooler
-MSI H81M-E35 V2 (MS-7817)
-4,096 MB G.Skill DDR3 @ 1,598 MHz (2 Ram Stick) (8GB Total)
-1TB Hard Drive
-500GB Hard Drive
-Sapphire TOXIC AMD Radeon R9 280X
-Corsair 750 Watt CS750M 80+ Modular Power Supply
-DIYPC Zondda-O Black/Orange Mid-Tower

P.S.
I am already planning on getting an SSD

Solution
For 1080p,if you can play games with your current GPU, then nothing is worth upgrading from your current system for now, wait some more for new pascal, polaris GPUs

My current GPU can run at 1080p but at 40-55 FPS, plus I need a new GPU because of the graphic stretches. Worth the upgrade or save up for a better GPU?

I'm with you that I prefer NVidia cards. Just more stable and better software.

That being said the 970 is just one step up the hierarchy totem pole compared to a 280x. Not worth the expense for such meager improvements. Do you have screen tearing going on? Consider a freesync monitor to go with your AMD card.

If I was going NVidia I'd consider the 980.

you most likely need to re-paste the card, or the fans need replacing
are the fans spinning properly?

you can also set up a more aggressive fan profile with msi afterburner

Paste? Kinda new to this, there is paste in the GPU? Now that you mention it, when I launch a more intensive game to run, I don't know which fan but a fan seems to hit something once it spins faster.

yes, thermal paste

it is a good idea to do so when you buy used, thermal paste has a lifespan

"hit something"? what exactly do you mean by this?

You can check the temps of the video card. See if it's overheating.

It could just be a faulty card. Artifacts are usually, overheating, faulty hardware, or drivers/crossfire issues with game.

Does it happen in all games or just one particular game?
