i've got a asus z97 deluxe w/i7 4790k running windows 7 x64

I'm trying to move from a samsung 850 EVO to a samsung 950 pro m.2 ssd. the m.2 slot on this board only runs at x2, so in order to get full speed out of the drive i knew i needed a pci-e adapter to run it at x4.

while i waited for the adapter to ship, i downloaded the nvme driver, and used samsung's cloning software to clone my existing drive over. it took a little fiddling in the bios, but i was able to get the system to recognize the drive and was able to boot from it.

got the adapter in today, installed the drive on it, and installed the adapter. booted into bios with the intention of verifying boot order, and the drive wasn't being seen.

switched boot priority back to the 850 with the 950 still installed and now i get the boot device led on, and q-code 'dd' (not a valid code). i've tried messing with CSM settings and disabling secure boot. if i go into bios and manually force a boot from the 850 through the boot menu i can get into the OS, and the 950 is recognized in windows.

a little mystified that the drive was recognized in the dedicated m.2 slot, but now it's invisible to the bios. any ideas?

Solution
Do you have the very latest bios revision installed? Manually? Don't rely on any automatic bios checking utilities. Go to the product page and make sure you have the latest bios version.
