i'm looking to upgrade from a gtx 960, and i'm thinking about either a gtx 970 or r9 390.
i'm leaning towards the r9 390 for the 8gb of vram, but i'm not sure if my power supply can handle it.
it's the corsair cx600m. my other specs are: i5-4460, 12gb ram, 120gb ssd, 1tb hdd.

if it can't, i'll have to go with the 970 because i'd rather not shell out extra money for a new power supply yet...

You probably could JUST scrape by, maybe. It's not a high end PSU so if you could replace it soon, that would be good. I have an r9 390, and HAD a cx750m I know I probably could have gotten by fine with it for a month or so with that GPU but I didn't feel like I should. If you do just like I said replace the PSU soon. For future reference I...

thanks, i think i'll go with the 970 then because it seems kinda risky to go with the 390. on a side note, is the 970 actually a worthwhile upgrade from the 960? i would sell the 960 of course so i wouldn't be spending the whole price on the 970.

Yes it can!...... I have been running a 390 with an AMD 8350 on a 500W EVGA power supply for more than half a year without issues. With the power supply, you actually have to look at the Amperage rating on the 12V rail. Once its 25A and over your good to go!

really? hmm...might go with the r9 390 still then...i'll have to look into it more. even though the r9 390 has better specs long-term, i'll probably end up upgrading again next year so i might just go with the 970 for now..

Half a year is nothing. If a PSU were to last only half a year, that would be terrible. Good PSUs should last 5-10 years. I don't see your system doing so.

Actually, I never experienced a thermal shutdown on this power supply yet and I don't think i will, unless I add more load to it than it can handle. What I am trying to bring to the forefront is that everyone keeps looking at wattage figures when trying to select a power supply and doesn't consider the amperage capability of it. Most "good" power supplies from 500W and up will support 25A and more on the 12V rail. You just need to check the specs properly before hand.

The Corsair CX600m supports 46A on the 12V rail which is more than enough to run a R9 390, that's why I suggested that he keeps his power supply. The only way it wouldn't work is if his power supply is faulty.

Looking strictly at amperage isn't very good, either, since many PSUs do not even meet their rated amperage. I don't consider a power supply "poor quality" if it doesn't have near its rated wattage on the 12V rail. Are the old ancient PSUs with low 12V amperage and high 3.3V and 5V amperage poor quality because of that? No. What is poor is when people blatantly purchase PSUs without checking the amperage first. If I'm looking for a quality power supply with 550W on the 12V rail, there is nothing wrong with purchasing a quality 650W rated unit that has only 550W on the 12V rail. As long as it's quality, who cares? Anyone can read a load table.

I don't expect you to experience a thermal shutdown; I expect the capacitors in your EVGA 500W to fail, and then it'll be overvoltage protection that will shut it down. or UVP if it's even present in that unit.

thanks for the replies, i'm still not really sure if i should go with the r9 390 or gtx 970. i would prefer the r9 390 but i'm worried about my power supply. do you think it would last about a month before i could get a new one?
also, if my power supply can't handle it, what would happen? would i just get crashes or would it actually damage my hardware?

crashes, general instability, poor performance, component damage is possible

cx corsairs really are not meant for gaming systems

i know they're not that good but it's all i have atm, so would it work for a while with an r9 390 until i can get a new one? i've seen other people using them with an r9 390 but im not sure if they're just lucky...

Spec-wise your CX will work with the R9 390. We cannot answer if it'll work for a month or not. We cannot predict the future. Every PSU behaves differently.

alright, i'll probably order the r9 390 this week. worst case scenario is i would have to order a new power supply if mine doesn't work i guess. i probably will get a new one next month to be safe anyways though.
